Academician Ouyang Zhongcan is a theoretical physicist. He got his Ph.D. from Tsinghua University in Beijing in 1984. From 1987 to 1988, he studied the theory of liquid crystal biofilm under Professor W. Helfrich, the inventor of twisted liquid crystal. He joined the Institute of Theoretical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1989. He was elected as an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1997, an Academician of the Third World Academy of Sciences in 2003, and an International Fellow of the Japan Society of Applied Physics in 2015.
Summary of the Speech
This year is the 50th anniversary of the invention of twisted nematic LCD. As the advent of 5G 4K/8k UHD displays, with the support of Mini LED backlight and quantum dot technology, LCD displays is greeted with a new peak of development, and remain its dominant role in large-size displays in the future. Since ideal luminescent materials that defend against water and oxygen have not yet appeared, OLED displays will penetrate into small and medium-sized and flexible displays. In particular, as the printed display technology matures, OLED displays will be greeted with a rapid increase in market share. The research upsurge of Micro LED is surging. It will come into the market of AR/VR micro displays at first, but the dawn is still not seen in TV and small/medium-sized displays. Laser display will have a certain development, but holographic projection display is the development direction of future disruptive display.
