Full of black technologies, Sony can always make different display technologies shine and bring various surprises to its fans. On July 21, Toshiyuki Ogura, the chief engineer of Sony’s Vision Product Technology Strategy Department, will attend the 11th (Shanghai) Display Innovation China Forum (referred to as “DIC FORUM” for short) and deliver a speech to reveal the secret behind Sony’s top image quality. It is really worth looking forward to. DIC FORUM is jointly hosted by the China Optics and Optoelectronics Manufactures Association Liquid Crystal Branch (CODA) and Nikkei BP, and will be grandly held at Intercontinental Shanghai Hongqiao NECC from July 21 to 22, 2020. This forum will invite experts and scholars from the global display industry and upstream and downstream enterprise elites to participate. It will show the research and judgement of the global senior scholars on the future development trend of the display industry, discuss the challenges and opportunities of new display technologies and new applications... We can hear the future of display at DIC FORUM.

No matter how it changes in the TV era, and no matter how the display technology changes, the world of image always has a figure of Sony, because Sony has mastered the core of the display technology - the image engine. Sony has implanted it into the image processing chip X1, and all TVs equipped with X1 have become classic collections, which can naturally and accurately present the colors of the image, and inadvertently immerse the audience in a colorful world.
The X1 chip has established Sony's long-term position in the high-end TV market. Now that the LCD TV market has entered the 8K era, Sony has upgraded the X1 chip for 8K TVs and launched the 8K HDR image processing chip X1? Ultimate, which has raised the image quality of LCD TVs to a new level. The 8K HDR image processing chip X1? Ultimate can not only optimize colors and details of the image, but also improve the image quality of 4K and 2K to a level close to 8K, and the TRILUMINOS display technology driven by this chip can make the image color more natural and accurate. This makes the Sony 8K TV 85Z8H stand at the peak of another era of image quality.

With the vigorous development of liquid crystal display technology, OLED, as an epoch-making display technology, has begun to mature. In 2017, Sony launched the consumer-grade 4K OLED TV and introduced screen sound technology to allow more people to see the beauty of OLED. Lighter and thinner, higher contrast, wider color gamut and faster refresh rate make OLED TVs gallop in the high-end TV market. Sony is one of the main promoters of OLED TVs. In 2019, Sony occupied half of China’s OLED TV market through A9G, A8G and other OLED TV products.
All of this is inseparable from Sony's persistent pursuit of OLED technology. According to information, Sony developed the 13-inch 800×600 resolution OLED TV engineering machine in February 2001. In the past 11 years, Sony has never stopped its R&D of OLED display technology. Sony launched the world’s first OLED TV (XEL-1) 10 years ago, released the world’s first 4K OLED TV at CES in 2013, and launched BVM-X300, a professional-grade OLED monitor for broadcasting and TV, in 2015. Sony is a big R player in OLED technology. Its long-term and continuous R&D investment has given Sony a unique understanding and control of OLED, which is beyond the reach of ordinary TV manufacturers.
Although Sony’s LCDs and OLEDs are good, they are difficult to accomplish great deeds in the super-large size market due to their size limit. While Micro LEDs incorporate advantages of low power consumption, high brightness, super high resolution and color saturation, fast response, super power saving, and relatively long life and high efficiency, etc., break through the size limit and become a very competitive display technology. In 2019, Sony 8K Curved Surface “Crystal LED”, as its top product, shocked the audience once it came on the stage. The “Crystal LED” display system is composed of 144 display units, which are combined to form the huge and accurate image with a 120-degree bend, 2.7 meters in the vertical direction and 8 meters in the horizontal direction. When installing, a 5 degree installation angle is kept between each display unit.
This system adopts the fine LED technology independently developed by Sony. The area of the luminescent particles is as thin as a hair, only 0.003 square millimetres. 99% area of the display unit has undertook black optical processing. The contrast is as high as 1 million:1, and the brightness reaches 1000nit. “Seamless splicing” can be achieved between display units. It is close to a wide viewing angle of 180° in horizontal/vertical direction. The color and brightness will not change when viewed from any angle. At the same time, this system can support up to 120 frames of video signal input. It can also display high-speed moving images smoothly, and support the active 3D system. Through Micro LED, Sony has pushed the image quality to a new level.
At present, various display technologies are emerging endlessly. Technologies such as LCD, OLED, Micro LED, QLED, QD-OLED, PrintOLED, etc. continue to emerge. However, no matter how the technology is iteratively upgraded, Sony, which masters the image quality password, will give full play to them, and open a new horizon in different application scenario.
The global display industry is full of uncertainties in 2020. Focusing on the theme of “Work Together for a Win-win Future”, DIC FORUM will work with industry leaders such as Sony to discuss the global development strategy of the display industry and the latest developments in the industry chain through keynote speeches and technical presentations in two days. This will provide a high-level and high-standard communication platform for the global display industry to promote the win-win cooperation between upstream and downstream enterprises.
Moreover, (Shanghai) Display Innovation Convention & EXPO (referred to as “DIC EXPO” for short) will be held from July 22 to 24, during the same period as DIC FORUM. The DIC EXPO is hosted by the authoritative association CODA and fully supported by top domestic and foreign associations and institutions. The exhibition area is over 50,000 square meters. It is expected that there will be more than 1,000 exhibitors from all over the world, bringing together more than 50,000 professional visitors of the industry from all over the world. At present, BOE, Tianma, Visionox, HKC, MANTIX, Everdisplay Optronics, InfoVision Optoelectronics, Merck, OFILM, Almaden, Fuyin Group, Shuangxing New Materials and other leading enterprises in the display industry chain have confirmed their participation in DIC EXPO.
